The blank-off plate is missing, pushed aside or left on top of the grate. Wolf supplies it to sit centred on the ceramic tiles for even cooking; off-centre, it hides part of the tiles and the heat goes lopsided.

Before you call
With the section cold and its knob off, lift the grate — keeping clear of the igniter, as Wolf’s guide asks — and check that the blank-off plate is centred on the tiles, not shoved aside or put away. Relight with the knob fully at Hi and allow the full ten-minute preheat before judging the heat. After cooking, Wolf advises leaving the charbroiler on for another ten minutes to burn off what dripped, which keeps the tiles clearest. If a patch still stays dark, stop there: the burner and igniter are not owner parts.

Often nothing is broken. Wolf's gas range guide lists one check for a charbroiler that clicks without stopping: the knob turned all the way to Hi, not just past the point where it lit.
